Cheap & Free Activities!

Local knowledge is the most valuable while on Holiday! I think we all agree that holidays are expensive so what better way to fill in some down time in our beautiful area with these fun and cheap and FREE activities!

Some of these activities are outdoor activities, this combined with the changeable weather in Fiordland means care should be taken to research these, especially those such as hiking and fishing (which a license is required for).

Mountain Bike Tracks
One of Te Anau's Mountain Bike trail is located in Ivon Wilson Park, just before you come to the wildlife centre on the road to Manapouri.

The second has just opened up and is located just 6km from Te Anau town centre on the corner of Sinclair Road and Milford Road. Perenuka Mountain Bike Park has recently opened its gates for riding with 10 kilometres of trails developed so far and plans for another 10 kilometres of track in the near future. Thanks to the Simpson family for opening up a chunk of their farm for community use.

Local Walks
Te Anau TOP 10 is ideally located across the road from beautiful Lake Te Anau. Step out our front entrance and follow the beautiful path around the lake towards the Wildlife Park or DOC museum!

Fiordland is extremely famous for its local walking tracks. The Kepler Track starts across the lake from us. Take a break from driving and walk up to Mount Luxmore and take in the 360 degree panoramic views that are sure to take your breath away! We have an information sheet at reception with details of day walk options on the Kepler Track!

Te Anau Wildlife Centre
For a peek at some of Fiordland’s birds that are difficult to see in the wild, visit the Te Anau Wildlife Centre beside Lake Te Anau. It’s a great place for children and families, and an easy 30 minute walk around the lake or it is a short 3 minute drive from our Holiday Park.

The rare flightless Takahē are the stars of the Wildlife Centre and meeting these prehistoric-looking characters are a ‘must do’ for Fiordland visitors. All birds are held in aviaries here have either been injured and cannot survive in the wild, or they have been involved in captive rearing programmes. The injured birds are rehabilitated and if possible, released back into the wild when they are strong enough.

Entry is Free but a gold coin donation is appreciated!

Museum at the Department of Conservation
The local DOC visitor Centre has a great range of informative displays for all ages! They have a gift shop as well as fansastic walking/hiking information on this beautiful area. Outside you can have fun trying to spot the camouflaged geckos in their enclosures. The DOC visitor centre is a great place to stop at on the way to the Wildlife Centre.

While you are here you can feed the ducks- a great way to keep children entertained and get rid of that stale loaf of bread from the campervan.

Trout Observatory
For just a $2 entry fee you can visit the local Trout Observatory which contains local Brown and Rainbow Trout. It also features an information display and is conveniently located across from the DOC Visitor Centre.

Local Fishing Spots
You can fish year round on Lake Te Anau and the lake directly across from our Holiday Park has been a successful location for past guests! Fish caught in Fiordland are Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. A fishing licence is required to fish locally. A rod, lures and a day or season license can be purchased at either the local sporting goods shop or hunting shop. Our friendly staff are more than happy to point out their locations for you.

Ivon Wilson Park has a Junior Fishery in Lake Henry which is stocked with fish each year and a great location for children to learn to fish. A Junior Fishery is only able to be fished by license holders aged 17 years and under.

Seasonal fishing locations
The Upukerora and Whitestone Rivers are popular fly fishing rivers with clear shallow pools where you can stalk your fish.

The Waiau River and Lake Manapouri (year round) are also fantastic fishing locations. Remember to check, clean and dry your gear to prevent the spread of Didymo.

Take a Swim!
If you are brave enough Lake Te Anau is a great all year round swimming spot. You will see local families braving the fresh mountain water throughout the year. The beachy spot 200m to the right of the Holiday Park is the best spot for this- there is even a pontoon for the kids to jump off!

Ramparts Road Lookout
Whether you are a keen photographer or just want to make the most of the beautiful view, this lookout will give you the chance to capture a spectacular sunrise or sunset.

You can see Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, the Takitimu , Kepler and Murchison Mountains from this beautiful elevated viewpoint. A great place for a picnic on a summers day also.
