Often described as the “eighth wonder of the world”, the jewel in Fiordland’s crown, and one of the New Zealand’s top travel destinations, Milford Sound Piopiotahi was carved by glaciers thousands of years ago during the ice ages. Breathtaking in any weather, forest-clad cliffs rise vertically from clear, dark waters, waterfalls cascade downwards into the sea from as high as 1000 metres, and mountain peaks scrape the sky – the most famous being the monumental Mitre Peak which rises 1,700 metres out of the water.
Despite its name, Milford Sound is actually a fiord. It is the only fiord in New Zealand that is accessible by road, with booming tourism leading to the opening of the Homer Tunnel in 1953. Boat cruises are a hugely popular and easy way to experience the Sound. For those more adventurous, there are also opportunities for sea kayaking, diving or flightseeing.
Sometimes called “The Sound of Silence”, Doubtful Sound (Patea) is the deepest of Fiordland’s 14 fiords and the second longest, with three distinct “arms”, numerous small islands and several outstanding waterfalls. It lies deep within the Fiordland National Park about 50 kilometres from Manapōuri, the nearest inhabited town. It’s the departure point for excursions to Doubtful Sound with a boat journey across Lake Manapōuri, followed by a bus trip on the gravel road across Wilmot Pass to the Sound, where tour boats berth at a small wharf in Deep Cove. As well as its spectacular scenery, the fiord is also home to a wide variety of fauna, including one of the southernmost populations of bottlenose dolphins.
